Wrexham's comedic nod to Spygate will just give Southampton more fuel to win

Spygate and Southampton are now just commonplace next to each other.

Indeed, ever since May's dark arts came to light, with the Saints admitting to spying on three Championship opponents - including their playoff semi-final adversaries Middlesbrough - the topic being mentioned in passing has been unavoidable.

So far this campaign, opposition fans have revelled in reminding the South Coast giants of their controversial antics, with binoculars aplenty from supporters, who have goaded at Tonda Eckert's expense.

Southampton fans themselves have even referenced the well-known spying debacle in chants, with the Saints extremely hungry to win promotion this season, as an us versus them attitude possibly works in their favour.

Wrexham's social media team have even put together a comedic nod to Spygate ahead of the two teams clashing right before the international break, with the Hollywood duo of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney - who co-own the club - front and centre of the humorous clip.

Reynolds and McElhenny have been green screened into a memorable scene of the crime involving Spygate in this comical clip.

Indeed, they are positioned where the Spygate culprit was uncovered when trying to watch Middlesbrough's training from afar, with the Deadpool actor, and his co-owner counterpart, stating: "Today, for no particular reason, we want to talk about the importance of privacy, specifically how to prevent spies from seeing what you’re doing.”

Of course, they're referencing Spygate, all behind the guise of an advert for Firefox, who sponsor the Wrexham home shirts, with Oxford United, Ipswich Town, and Boro also - not discreetly - mentioned, who were the three sides Southampton admitted to snooping on.

This is in-keeping with the personalities of the two American owners, who are well-known for being comedic actors who don't take themselves so seriously.

But, while Wrexham fans, and the wider footballing world, have found this video funny, the Saints contingent have found it rather cringe-inducing, with Martin Sanders, who is a Southampton content creator labelling it as "utterly embarrassing."

This stunt could really backfire, as the promotion chasers would have already been pumped up to win in Wales, with this just giving them more fuel to collect a victory at the Racecourse Ground.

This could backfire against the Red Dragons

Eckert's men haven't cared one bit this season when opposition fans have tried to rile up them regarding Spygate.

Indeed, away from the opening defeat at Watford, the Saints have collected an impressive four wins, and two draws in Championship action so far, as they simply keep going about their business, without listening to these loud external voices.

They will be aware of this clip doing the rounds on social media, though, as it's already hit 300,000 views and counting, with the promotion hopefuls desperate to wipe that collective smug grin off the American duo's faces with an emphatic win on their own patch.

They showed last season that they can wipe the floor with the Red Dragons, as Finn Azaz, Cyle Larin, and Kuryu Matsuki were among the quickfire goalscorers in a superb 5-1 win at the Racecourse Ground.

All three players mentioned scored last time out, too, as Bristol City were made to curse their wasteful finishing, next to the Saints' unbelievable potency, in a 4-1 defeat.

They will want more goals to come their way, and another huge victory this early into the season would send out a huge statement to the division, with the social media post looking rather foolish in retrospect if a hammering was handed out.

You would also think Wrexham would be hush, having just leaked six goals to West Ham United.

It's unlikely to be another walk in the park, as Parkinson will set his team up not to be trounced, after the horrors of the London Stadium.

But, while the Saints haven't always started games at an intense pace on the road this season, anticipate that they might be a bit more guns blazing early on in Wales, with Eckert's team talk potentially featuring a mention of Reynolds and McElhenney.
