Southampton made a massive signing in the final week of the summer transfer window by bringing Arsenal star Aaron Ramsdale to the St. Mary's Stadium in a £25 million transfer move. After a number of brilliant performances for the Saints in the previous two months, Ramsdale gave a masterclass goalkeeping display against Everton to register a clean-sheet and build the foundation for a much-needed 1-0 Premier League win.
Similarly, another England star Adam Lallana has also been a key player in the Southampton midfield, allowing Russell Martin's side to create huge chances inside the final third without giving away the ball-possession. These two signings have been very crucial in Southampton's recent progress and thus, the Saints may consider bringing in another England international to bolster their squad in the January transfer window.
£20 million England international could complete Southampton's brilliant front three
One of the England national team stars who could be open to joining Southampton is Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson. The 32-year-old forward made a name for himself in the Championship where he scored 20 league goals to guide Bournemouth to achieve promotion to the Premier League in 2015.
Then, Wilson improved his finishing after each league campaign and his prolific goalscoring displays at Bournemouth were rewarded with a £20 million transfer move to join Newcastle United four years ago. Since then, Wilson has been an integral part of Eddie Howe's side, forming a brilliant partnership with Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak in the attack.
Wilson scored an impressive eighteen Premier League goals in the 2022/23 season to lead Newcastle United to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. However, several injuries in the previous Premier League campaign led the 32-year-old to be unavailable for a large part of the season, and now, the Magpies are open to listening to transfer offers for the England star.
Despite struggling with fitness, Wilson is still a proven Premier League goalscorer who can score around ten goals for the Saints in the second half of the league season. Further, every win is important for Russell Martin's side and thus, having a quality centre forward can boost their chances of consistently taking good results in the English top flight.
Although Archer and Armstrong have been scoring goals in the previous few matches, signing Wilson will bring both quality and squad depth in the first-team squad. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether Southampton will decide to enter into negotiations with Newcastle United to sign Wilson in the January transfer window.
