Southampton: Steven Davis hoping to claim Manchester United scalp
By Chris Hughes
After netting in his 200th appearance against Crystal Palace, Steven Davis is confident Southampton can claim a win over Manchester United.
Jose Mourinho’s Red Devils have been the side to beat this season alongside their city rivals, with United becoming the kings of late goals once again, with 16 goals scored from just five games as well.
Meanwhile Mauricio Pellegrino’s Southampton have scored just twice from open play in all competitions, with club captain Steven Davis’ early strike against Crystal Palace the only goal of an early kick-off between the two sides last weekend.
The Northern Irishman is now confident that the Saints can overcome the joint-Premier League leaders, despite the fact that they remain unbeaten this season.
"“That goes without saying and we want some big scalps this season, we’ve managed to do that in previous seasons and there’s no reason why we can’t do it again.” – Davis"
Southampton enjoyed their most-convincing performance of the season last weekend against Crystal Palace, with Mario Lemina and Wesley Hoedt particularly impressing.

Following the former’s arrival, Steven Davis has pushed forward into his more natural central-midfield role, allowing him to push forward into the box and make full-use of his hard work ethic.
Last season in the Premier League under Claude Puel Southampton struggled against the top-six, failing to win once against any of them outside of cup competitions.
However, Davis is confident that this season – under the passionate Mauricio Pellegrino – Southampton can become giant-killers once again.
"“It’s going to be a hugely difficult game for us but we believe we’ve got the quality to beat any team in the league. We need to show it now.“Every game in the Premier League, whether it’s against one of the top six or any position in the league, it always has its difficulties. You need to be at your best.”"
Davis’ performance against Roy Hodgson’s side last Saturday will warrant him keeping his place against United, meaning he will likely lead the side out this coming weekend against Mourinho’s side at St. Mary’s Stadium.
