Goalkeeper and Defence

A surprise selection in the Southampton line-up, Alex McCarthy did well in his first Premier League appearance for Southampton and first game in the top flight for a year and a half. With no major saves to make, the goalkeeper did what was necessary, organised his back line well and played a huge part in earning Southampton their first clean sheet in 11 games.. Goalkeeper. Southampton. ALEX MCCARTHY. 8

Southampton. JACK STEPHENS. 8. After an incredibly underwhelming performance on Tuesday, Stephens proved his doubters wrong with a brilliant performance at his unnatural position of right-back. The young defender made a few crucial clearances to deny United a clear chance at goal which warranted the fill-in right-back a high score.. Right-back

8. Hoedt was personally my man of the match and was also awarded the prize by the pundits of BT Sport. Like Stephens, the Dutchman made some brilliant clearances and was able to keep up with the likes of Rashford, Martial and Young. The reason why his score isn’t higher is because the 23-year-old missed arguably Southampton’s best chance of the game when he was left with a free header following a corner which he nodded wide.. Centre-back. Southampton. WESLEY HOEDT

7. Yoshida also had a much better game in defense compared to the Wembley horror show but it’s clear to see that he is inferior to the quality of his fellow centre-back Hoedt in terms of defending. The Japanese international could’ve gotten closer to Lukaku early on when the Belgian’s header went over the bar when it should’ve gone into the net. However, the captain played well and played a large part of the clean sheet.. Center-back. Southampton. MAYA YOSHIDA

7. The young left-back replaced Matt Targett who hobbled off of the pitch on Tuesday for the 22-year-old. A solid performance from the full-back was pleasing to see, especially with the potential sale of Ryan Bertrand in January. Going forward, he looked decent but handled the likes of Rashford, Young and Martial well. Whilst Bertrand currently has a hamstring injury, McQueen may be a decent replacement, especially if future performances are similar to his at the Theater of Dreams.. Left-back. Southampton. SAM MCQUEEN
