Southampton’s signing of Stuart Armstrong from Celtic is set to net the player’s former club Dundee United a sell-on fee of 10% and a nice windfall in the process.

A deal for midfielder to move to Southampton from the Scottish champions is due to be completed today and officially announced on Wednesday.

According to the Daily Record, Dundee United will be due £540,000 from the £7m transfer fee that the 26-year-old will command.

This is because the 10% clause is calculated from the difference between the values of his transfer from Dundee to Celtic and then from the Hoops to the Saints.

Armstrong moved between the Scottish clubs for £1.6m in 2015, and will cost a further £5.4m in his latest move. 10% of that difference brings about the £540k to be paid to the Scottish Championship club.

More from Saints Marching

He played 150 times for Dundee United after coming through the latter age-groups of their youth academy set up and contributed to 52 goals in his time at Tannadice with 21 goals and 31 assists.

At Celtic, a similar level of creativity came from him too. 144 appearances yielded 28 goals and 25 assists across all competitions.

Armstrong was also able to play 33 times in European competitions in Scotland and will hope to help push the Saints back towards Europa League qualification in 2018/19.

Now permanent Southampton boss Mark Hughes will hope that his new man can produce the same sort of goal threat from central areas in the Premier League that he has done in his career so far.

The man capped by Scotland six times so far has been a long-term target for the Saints after reported interest from St Mary’s last summer.

Crystal Palace were also said to have looked to sign Armstrong this summer too but he looks to have chosen the South Coast over a move to London.

The Saints have been pursuing attacking-midfield targets for a while now and would have been disappointed to miss out on the signing of Norwich City attacker James Maddison to Leicester City.
