Adam Armstrong

According to a recent report from the Express, Saints are eyeing up a move for Armstrong after the 24-year-old’s superb season for Blackburn Rovers in the Championship.

A £15m fee has been quoted and would represent good business if Saints think he can transfer the form that saw him bag 29 goals in all competitions to the top-tier.

Looking at how 5ft 8in Armstrong plays on the shoulder of defenders and uses bursts of pace to create chances for himself, there are big comparisons to be made to current Saints striker Danny Ings. Interestingly, he is also very two-footed.

If Ralph Hasenhuttl is looking for a replacement for Ings this summer, Armstrong may well be a good choice even if he has not been tested in the top-flight before. His age means he has plenty of potential and sell-on value in future years.

Blackburn will surely want a fair deal for their main man and will be rueing the fact that they did not have a strong defence to back up Armstrong’s goals in 2020/21, resulting in a 15th-placed finish.
