Southampton confirm their third piece of summer transfer window business

Southampton have confirmed the sale of goalkeeper Angus Gunn to Norwich City as their third piece of summer transfer window business.

The fee received for Gunn could – according to Hampshire Live - rise to £10m, although this would still represent a loss on the initial £13.5m Saints paid Manchester City to sign him back in 2018.

The 25-year-old is the third departure from St Mary’s this summer after Wesley Hoedt joined Anderlecht on a permanent deal and Kayne Ramsay joined Crewe Alexandra on a season-long loan.

Via reports in France, Saints are said to be close to making their first signing of this window as left-back Romain Perraud inches closer to signing from Stade Brest.

Ever since he fell out of favour under Ralph Hasenhuttl, it has been fairly clear that Angus Gunn’s future did not lie with Saints.

His last Premier League appearance came in the famous 9-0 defeat to Leicester City and he never really looked comfortable in a Saints team.

He spent last season on-loan with Stoke City and was set to return their for a second campaign, but Norwich – who Gunn and his father Bryan have strong connections with – were clearly keen to take him to Carrow Road.

Saints will be disappointed not to see Gunn blossom as a player with them but they have now secured some crucial funds to invest back into the first-team squad.

The same can be said with Wesley Hoedt. Premier League football always looked too fast and furious for the Dutchman to deal with but Saints also free up some space and funds with his sale too – whether that be through a small fee or a freeing up of wages.

Kayne Ramsay’s loan comes after one top-flight appearance and gives him an opportunity to further develop his own career.
