Southampton's opening night opponents Wrexham have accelerated their pursuit of a Manchester United star, which can be a decisive blow to the Saints.
In a few hours, Southampton fans will get a telling glimpse of Will Still's men's readiness, exactly two weeks before the Championship opener. Now, for other teams, it's a usual event, but the Saints are heading into unknown territory regarding their Wrexham matchup.
Not due to their playing eleven strengths but because of Wrexham's transfer window, which has been impossible to second-guess and their wishlist spread all over the place. A few days ago, they were queuing up for Alfie Jones, and now their focus is back on top-notch Premier League names, when they couldn't acquire Jones.
Plus, they aren't shopping for fringe top-flight stars. Instead, they're in for a midfielder who has got two sets of fanbases from the Premier League elite who've both seen his class up close.
Eriksen could boost rival's winning chances at St. Mary's
We are talking about Christian Eriksen, who, in the words of Sky Sports' Anthony Joseph: "Wrexham have made an approach to sign Christian Eriksen. The Championship side have held talks with the player, who is a free agent after leaving Manchester United this summer."
Only a few hours back, former Staplewood graduate Luke Shaw also entered in the rumour mill and now, another of his teammates is out there weighing up his next steps. And the fact that it's a Red Devils player involved goes to show what more Wrexham can introduce on the field before their St. Mary's trip.
On the other side, there is Southampton who have slowed down their transfer activities and it's very much possible they don't add in any players until they host Wrexham.
Let's remain optimistic that too much of market inactivity doesn't come to haunt them.
