'Could leave' - Saints 2024 deadline day signing again awaits last moment exit

Southampton bagged Maxwel Cornet this same day, last year, but a lacklustre twelve months have seen Cornet awaiting another closing moments move.

Today, consistent Southampton attacker Ryan Fraser marks a full year since he journeyed back to St. Mary's for the second time. That day wasn't just a common evening, it was the market's deadline and thus Fraser must receive double congratulations from his everyday training peers.

But if you couldn't resist yourself from reading all moves that were ticked there, then you know there was another attacker who may have relished last year's throwback transfer alongside the 31-year-old Scot. Maxwel Cornet, and claps to you for getting it right straight up.

Yet, the irony is that the current West Ham man failed to generate the same applauding gestures from the fans. Forget strikes, not a single assist came, and therefore Cornet was also left out in the contribution-less pool as Ben Brereton Diaz.

The latter is onto some Derby County links and let's stay fingers-crossed on that space.

Likewise, Sky Sports believes Cornet is also up for a last moment exit and in their words: "As for West Ham, Maxwel Cornet is not in the squad at the City Ground and is the only senior player who could leave despite interest in playmaker Lucas Paqueta, who starts against Forest."

If the 28-year-old remains adamant on the English top-flight, then the upper limits might fall among the recent three to play in the Championship. But if he wishes to grab a breakthrough season, then accepting a second-division offer can be a smart alternative.

There is a gap of four teams in those two tiers, so, it's feasible enough that someone ends up handing a first-team kit number to Cornet.
