After the first seven league matches, Southampton find themselves at the nineteenth place with only one draw alongside six Premier League defeats. Among these matches, there has been a common pattern of making some crucial mistakes that has kept Russell Martin's side from taking more points. While the Saints were convincingly defeat by Brentford and Bournemouth, they could have taken a win against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest in the first two matches with some good finishing inside the final third.
Against Manchester United and Arsenal, Southampton showed much promising performances, however, their resilient efforts weren't enough to keep those two sides from scoring thrice against them. Thus, despite having a decent squad with a good balance between young talents and experienced stars, Southampton have largely underperformed this season. Hence, uncertainties are again looming over the Saints in their aim to avoid relegation and several former players and the fans want a great response from Russell Martin's side after the international break to make a comeback in the league.
Former Chelsea star believes Southampton will be relegated from the Premier League
While Southampton have started the season facing multiple defeats previously and then successfully making a comeback to avoid relegation in those seasons, former Chelsea star Tony Cascarino believes Russell Martin's side will get relegated this time. The former Republic of Ireland striker gave his opinions about Southampton's underwhelming start to the league campaign, saying,
"I think the toughest will be for Southampton because they are a promoted club, they have stayed with the way they have played. I just think they are lacking goals, and they will concede. I just think they will make mistakes. "
- Tony Cascarino
While Cascarino is correct in his assessment of Southampton, the Saints still have enough league matches to take some important wins to boost their momentum. However, the first win needs to come quickly and Southampton will want to secure their first three points in the next home fixture against Leicester City in front of their fans.
