Southampton winger Sam Edozie didn’t play a single minute of the 2025/26 season until February. He made his first start in late March.
If the club were promoted to the Premier League, there would be no real argument against letting Edozie leave. A player who has struggled over two seasons in England’s top flight, the Saints would have been smart to get a decent fee to reinforce elsewhere.
But following the club’s failure to do so, after being expelled from the play-offs for spying on three different Championship sides, they must think in the now.
Not many players in the Southampton ranks have spoken out after such a humiliating end to the season, but Edozie was the first to really do so encouragingly. His next steps are now clear.
A new opportunity
In an Instagram update where he reflected on a "difficult" season, Sam Edozie pledged his allegiance to Southampton, "Next season is a new opportunity. I'll be ready."Â
While he was forced to understudy fan favourite and star player Leo Scienza on the left wing upon his return, Edozie made a real impact and looked stronger physically than he sometimes has.
And since his return to the squad, the Saints are still unbeaten in the league. The same goes for Cyle Larin and James Bree, both of whom the club will need to try to retain this summer.
With Scienza more likely to leave than stay put following an outstanding season, Edozie should be targeting making that spot his own.
Edozie decision is easy
Sam Edozie’s contract is set to run out at the end of the 2026/27 season, and this is one the Saints could really be looking at renewing.
Next season, whether Scienza stays or not, Edozie could play a big part. Whether it’s in a starting position or simply as backup, the 23-year-old’s future is bright enough to remain a part of the fold.
At his age, Edozie has already played 81 times for Southampton. His contributions haven’t always been perfect since joining permanently from Manchester City in 2022, but there is clearly an exciting player there, especially at Championship level.
While question marks remain over who will lead them into 2026/27 in terms of a head coach, Sam Edozie should certainly be in the Saints squad for yet another promotion mount. His appetite is clearly there for it; now it’s time to see some real conviction.
