In the summer transfer window, Southampton sent 20-year-old midfield prodigy Shea Charles on a season long loan move to join Championship side Sheffield Wednesday. The decision was based on the talented midfielder getting a good playing time opportunity and becoming familiar to the pace and physicality demands required to establish himself as a regular starter for Southampton in the upcoming seasons. In the first few matches of the season, Charles has gone strength to strength becoming a key player for both club and country.
Last month, Northern Ireland took a 2-0 win over Luxembourg and faced a 1-0 defeat against Bulgaria with two impressive performances from the all-round box-to-box midfielder. Now, Charles has stepped up his efforts inside the final third as well, scoring a last-minute 2-1 winner against Coventry to secure an important win for Sheffield Wednesday. Charles was an ever-reliant presence in a double midfield pivot alongside Barry Bannan and registered two attempts on goal alongside making an important tackle and a clearance while defending.

Charles has played in various roles for Danny Rohl's side such as a box-to-box midfielder, double pivot, and a deep lying playmaker. His passing and game awareness in the middle of the park is impressive and now the Northern Ireland international is working on his goalscoring ability as well. Charles's upward trajectory as a young rising midfielder has helped Sheffield Wednesday, who have taken three wins and a draw in their previous five matches after a struggling start to the season.
Currently, Sheffield Wednesday are fifteenth in the Championship with eleven points after nine matches, and sit five points behind sixth-placed Watford. Charles is aiming to continue his great start to the season and help Danny Rohl's side as they aim towards achieving promotion to the Premier League. Moreover, Charles can become a regular mainstay in the Southampton midfield from the next season if he continues his impressive displays in the Championship.
