In the first two matches in the new Premier League season, Southampton created some decent goal scoring chances despite not scoring a goal. On the other hand, the defence was also good but occasional mistakes kept off the Saints from keeping a clean sheet. Thus, after two back to back defeats, Southampton prepared to face Brentford in an away fixture in the third match day of the Premier League.

This was also the debut match for new signing Aaron Ramsdale, who recently joined the Saints in a £25 million deal from Arsenal. In the first half, Brentford created some good chances, however, Aaron Ramsdale and the defence helped in keeping the score at 0-0. However, with only two minutes remaining before half time, Brentford took advantage as Southampton gave away possession in their own half, and Bryan Mbuemo scored the first goal of the match despite Ramsdale's save on Mbuemo's first attempt.

At the beginning of the second half, Southampton increased their efforts to find the equalising goal and almost came very close to scoring but Adam Armstrong mistimed the ball inside the box and the score remained 1-0. Minutes later, Brentford again advanced forward, and took advantage of another misplaced pass from Southampton's defence and Bryan Mbuemo scored his brace to put Brentford ahead by 2-0 around the hour mark. Five minutes later, Brentford made it 3-0 after Southampton's defence couldn't keep out Wissa's attempt on goal.

In the final minutes of the match, Southampton scored their first goal of this Premier League season with new signing Yukinari Sugawara finding the back of the net with his brilliant finish. However, the Saints faced another defeat, and now Southampton need to make some big tactical changes to take some winning momentum and avoid relegation this season. Southampton's next Premier League match is two weeks later, when they will face Manchester United and a lot of the new signings are expected to make their Saints debut as well.
