Russell Martin buying Joe Rothwell can see Southampton paying the price

Former Southampton duo Russell Martin and Joe Rothwell have joined forces in Scotland but the Saints might have to handle the midfield consequences that come with it.

Talking solely about the July transfer deals, the Joe Rothwell to Rangers one will definitely bring top-three best signing chants from the majority of Championship fans. Likewise, Southampton fans are also left both in awe and admiration of two of their former heroes crossing paths again in the Scottish division.

Simultaneously, not everyone leaves the table smiling and Rothwell's loan club Leeds United are that side here. Expectedly, they have a widening midfield gap to address in their ranks but instead of calling Rangers, they want Southampton to compensate for their loss.

According to a TeamTalk report, the Premier League tag holders have set their eyes on swaying away Shea Charles from St. Mary's.

Charles may pick Leeds United for Premier League allure

Now, the Saints would assume it to be a mere speculation because Charles' Premier League assessment isn't a glowing one just yet. As such, they will be left scratching their heads if Leeds present their spending limits for the 21-year-old second-division star.

Moreover, Charles being relied on to step up in a Rothwell-like defensive setup sounds odd but maybe, Daniel Farke's men are adopting a fresh tactical blueprint for their Premier League run.

Even earlier, they were craving for Mateus Fernandes' genius in their squad but the Saints made it clear not to go down without driving a heavy profit. That won't be done here, though, until Leeds United don't fear emptying away their summer budget with two months more to go.

As for Charles, he has got his hands on the youth Premier League titles but ending on the successful end of a relegation fight isn't an insignificant objective nonetheless.
