Saints may have revealed their next manager before Will Still was even sacked

Speculation is already underway about who will become Southampton's next manager and there is a clear favourite in the early betting odds.

Popular former Southampton manager, Ralph Hasenhüttl, is as short as 7-2 to take the vacant role at St Mary's. The Austrian is currently without a club after being sacked by German Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg following a run of eight games without a victory.

That was a harsh call given that the passionate Austrian had managed the North German club out of a relegation scrap in his first eight matches. The following year, he'd steered the 'Wolves' up to 12th place before he was dismissed.

In his four years at Southampton, 'The Alpine Klopp' took charge of 173 matches, winning 60, losing 75 and drawing 38.

At 58 years-old, Hasenhüttl could well be in his prime at the moment. With the team currently at such a low point, the warmth, good humour, and passion that the Austrian possesses might contrast starkly with Still's honest, yet dour, business-like approach to management.

During his tenure, Hasenhüttl led Southampton to 16th, 11th, 15th and 15th in the Premier League. He also guided the club to an FA Cup semi-final in March 2021.

Hasenhüttl, who was appointed in December 2018, departed in November 2022 with the club in the Premier League relegation zone. Ironically, the Saints had amassed 12 points after 14 games, which was as many as they could manage for the entire 2024/24 season under a trio of managers.

Many fans would welcome the Austrian back to St Mary's with open arms. He always seemed to have the club at heart and was always expressive and emotional on the touchline. Some fans might remember the way that he sank to his knees in the technical area after beating Liverpool 1-0 at home in 2021.

Re-appointing Hasenhüttl could be a step backwards

However, some might believe that re-appointing Hasenhüttl as Still's replacement is taking a step backwards, or hankering for a bygone era.

Hasenhüttl's attendance at the Bristol City game was curious timing given the frailty of Will Still's position. If the Austrian is appointed, questions might be asked about the integrity of the board.

Joining Hasenhüttl at the top of the shortlist of favourites are some familiar names. Michael Carrick, Lee Carsley, Russell Martin, and Brendan Rodgers are available (with the exception of England under-21 coach Carsley).

Arguably the Championship's best manager

Further down the list, Liam Rosenior and Mark Robins are eye-catching potential candidates. The current Stoke manager is arguably the division's hottest property.

Southampton travel to Queens Park Rangers on Wednesday before playing Sheffield Wednesday at home on Saturday. It's unlikely that the new boss will be in charge for either of those two games.

After the international break, Saints travel to London for a date with Charlton Athletic who are managed by former boss, Nathan Jones. That would be quite the talking point: Nathan Jones versus the man that he replaced at Southampton (Hasenhüttl) in the 'Alpine Klopp's' first game in charge.
