Southampton has only Alfie Gilchrist remaining on their decreasing right-back watch list but Middlesbrough may bring that tally down to zero.
While former top-flight icons may find it easy to admire Will Still's work in a few months, not everyone had him at the top of their Southampton pecking order. Of course, a few elite Premier League brains were also recommended and one among them was Luton Town's rollercoaster coach, Rob Edwards.
Simply, because Rob took them sailing towards the Premier League and had them fighting with all their might to save relegation down to the final matchdays. And who knows, their 26 points figure might remain the highest among the dropping clubs for around five years, as the first one has already gone past.
All in all, Edwards is more than capable of lifting teams to push above their weight and now, he is gradually plotting the same rise at Middlesbrough.
Right from the summer reinforcements, Edwards is thought to have his ears open for an Adam Armstrong transfer notification but there is a Southampton target too, sitting at the centre of his attention.
Gilchrist may be inclined to more playing stability at Middlesbrough
Chelsea's boy wonder, Alfie Gilchrist who knows his stay in London isn't going to be longer, and thus, can serve both his playing objective and Southampton's right-back purpose in only one transfer call. But, Sky Sports has added pessimism about his St. Mary's arrival as they said: "Middlesbrough are among the clubs interested in Chelsea defender Alfie Gilchrist".
Plus, Rob Edwards leads a side that was stuck in mid-table come the end of May, so, Gilchrist can be offered a better long-term run of games there.
Two seasons are a good enough timeframe for promising players to get their spark back and the 21-year-old Blues academy member would deem himself wise to avoid immediate Premier League distractions and thereby, Southampton too.
Regardless, bids are what will decide Gilchrist's next club and the Saints can still work their way to being frontrunners if they speed up the transfer paperwork side of things with Chelsea.
