A shocking statistic is doing the rounds on social media. While it's made to analyse Arsenal, it actually makes Russell Martin and Southampton look silly.

A few weeks ago, it was easy to look at positives at Southampton. While they have been bottom of the table for a long time now, the consensus was very much 'well, we're playing positively, it's only a matter of time before the results make themselves.'

Fast forwarding a few weeks, the results have not made themselves. As it stands, Southampton might actually be on track to break Derby County's record of being the worst team in Premier League history.

And now, an infographic is doing the rounds on social media, which makes for even worse viewing at Southampton.

Shocking statistic makes Russell Martin look silly at Southampton

According to betting analyst Mark O'Haire on X (formerly Twitter), Southampton have only produced an average of 0.66 xG (expected goals) from open play in the last eight Premier League games. This is the lowest of any team in the Premier League during this time period.

From set pieces, it isn't much better. Set pieces are always bound to produce less xG than in open-play, however, Southampton have only produced an average of 0.23 set-piece xG in the last eight league games. This is only better than Fulham, Man United and Wolves.

So, what exactly is Russell Martin's plan here? Yes, Southampton have impressive possession statistics but let's face it, nobody is looking at that. If they are, they're looking at the wrong thing and completely ignoring the basic premise of this sport.

The harsh truth is that nobody is going to remember Southampton for holding onto the ball when they're back in the Championship next season. But hey, at least Martin might earn himself a move after the Saints are relegated.
