Southampton academy graduate Luke Shaw might become a two-time European champion tonight, as Man United prepares to face Tottenham Hotspur.
The stage is set for the biggest night in European football. Well, the second biggest night... But it's still pretty big, don't get it twisted.
That's right, tonight is the Europa League final. The second echelon of European football will be concluded for yet another season tonight, with two English teams locking horns in what many would dub as a battle of which teams want it least.
I know, I know. This is a Southampton website and those in glass houses can't throw stones. However, speaking relatively, Tottenham and Man United are the only two teams who had worse seasons than Southampton.
Yet, one of them will be relieved of that bad brandish tonight. Somehow, they've both ended up in a Europa League final, so one of the relegation-near-misses can clinch European silverware, while qualifying for the Champions League.
We've already touched on a former Southampton player potentially representing the North London side, however, there's another noteworthy former Saint on the opposing team. This means that at least one former Saint will feel European glory tonight.
Southampton academy star Luke Shaw on the brink of double success
Luke Shaw has the potential to play for Man United tonight, after returning to action last month. The Southampton academy graduate has already won the Europa League with the Red Devils, but he could do it twice tonight.
The full-back might just come up against former Southampton flop Kevin Danso on the opposing team, in a match-up that's sure to raise Southampton eyebrows.
Unfortunately, Southampton has long been a team of "former players." The Saints has the reputation of being a feeder club, essentially producing young talents to benefit the bigger teams around them. Luke Shaw is one of the most widely cited examples in that regard.
However, for Southampton fans, there is no ill feeling towards Luke Shaw. He gave a lot to the red and white jersey before switching to the red side of Manchester. Now, it's a bittersweet feeling to watch him achieve all his success.
