Southampton could be selling another midfield gem, just like they did with Lallana

Leeds United have made a £20 million offer for Shea Charles. For Southampton fans who remember Adam Lallana, it has a familiar and uncomfortable feel.

Rumours that Leeds United have tabled a bid of £20 million for Southampton midfielder Shea Charles has prompted a flurry of social media and mainstream media content.

Southampton have been here before. A technically gifted, intelligent midfielder develops into one of the most sought-after players in his position, attracts the interest of clubs at a higher level, and eventually leaves St Mary's with the club richer in the pocket but far poorer on the pitch.

Adam Lallana did it. Shea Charles could be next.

Lallana came through the Southampton academy and spent eight years in the first team, captaining the side during their rise from League One to the Premier League. He became one of the best players in the country at his level.

Liverpool paid £25 million for him in 2014. He went on to win the Premier League and the Champions League, earning himself 34 England caps along the way.

Charles' story is quite different, although he too played for the Saints in The Championship.

Charles arrived at St Mary's in 2023, joining from Manchester City for an initial fee of £10.5 million in a deal that could rise to £15 million. He played a part in Southampton's promotion to the Premier League, then impressed on loan at Sheffield Wednesday as Southampton struggled, and has since re-established himself as one of Tonda Eckert's most reliable performers.

The Northern Ireland midfielder scored a late winner against Arsenal in the FA Cup, and did the same in a pulsating comeback win at Leicester City. The wonder goal that Charles scored against Oxford United at St Mary's was quite simply world-class.

The key difference between Lallana and Charles is obvious

The parallels are not exact. Lallana was a homegrown product; Charles cost money and came from a City academy production line. But the pattern is familiar enough to make Saints fans uneasy.

Leeds United are preparing to press ahead with their interest, with sources confirming Daniel Farke's side currently leads the race and Southampton have named their price.

Leeds have submitted a bid in excess of £20 million for the 22-year-old but could be forced to bid higher should Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, or Manchester United renew their interest.

Charles has a contract at St Mary's that runs until 2027, which gives Southampton some leverage, but not much. With the club heading into a second consecutive Championship season following the Spygate outcome, keeping hold of a player with this level of Premier League interest will be a serious challenge.

Lallana left and became world-class elsewhere. Charles has not reached that level yet, but the trajectory is clear. Southampton have built something worth fighting for this season. Losing one of their best midfielders before a ball is kicked next season would not be a positive move.

Ultimately, Shea Charles' impatience to force a move could lead to the player taking the wrong option. Charles is a top-six player who should be playing for one of the leading Premier League sides, not Leeds United or Nottingham Forest.

Southampton have reportedly rejected Leeds United's initial offer and will be looking for closer to £30 million for Charles.
