World class Southampton play-off hero must be destined for top six club

Shea Charles is likely to leave Southampton this summer, and his destination could well be a top six Premier League club

Shea Charles deserved better. Every Southampton supporter knew it, and after the spygate scandal threw the club out of the play-offs, the writing was firmly on the wall.

The Northern Ireland international has been one of the standout performers of the entire Championship campaign. Saints Marching has already described him as world-class, and those words looked more accurate with every passing week.

Now, through no fault of his own, Charles will be looking for a new club and a stellar contract at one of the Premier League's elite clubs.

Too good for the Championship

Southampton's expulsion from the play-offs sent shockwaves through St Mary's and the entire football landscape. Players are considering their futures, with some reportedly exploring legal action against the club.

For Charles, the timing could not have been more pointed. One year remains on his contract, and the appetite for a fresh start must be growing stronger by the day.

Nottingham Forest has already been linked with a move, according to online sources. Forest is a credible option, but it does not go nearly far enough for a player of his calibre.

His figures across the 2025-26 Championship season told their own story. He created 1.16 chances per 90 minutes, won 6.36 duels per 90 and contributed 5.59 defensive actions per 90. These are not Championship numbers. They belong in a very different conversation altogether.

A top six destination beckons

Southampton's reputation has been dragged through the mud in the most public and humiliating fashion. The trust between club and player lies in ruins. The notion that Charles would extend his stay under these circumstances is laughable..

Charles has done everything asked of him. He has performed with distinction under disgraced coach Tonda Eckert, helped take apart Middlesbrough on the way to the never-to-be play-off final, and represented Northern Ireland with class throughout.

Charles has earned the right to walk away with his sights set firmly on a top six Premier League club. Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea are exactly the environments a player of his profile deserves to be spoken about in relation to.

Fair enough, Forest represents an upgrade. But a genuine top six club represents the reward his talents merit.

Southampton have one window to cash in before losing him for nothing. Whether the timing suits the club is beside the point.

A player described by those closest to the game as world-class owes nothing further to a club that has embarrassed itself so completely at the most critical moment of the season.

The exit door stands open. The only question is how high Charles sets the bar as he goes through it.

He should set it as high as possible.
