Luke Shaw has lost back-to-back Europa League finals after yesterday's 1-0 defeat, which extends his hat-trick of losing European finals, twice in Euros and twice in the Europa League.

The first European champions of this season have been crowned, and it's Tottenham Hotspurs to everyone's surprise. Well, congratulations to them and to every Southampton fan who was rooting for them, but there is always the other side of the coin to look at as well.

Yes, the losing Manchester United side who saw their European dreams crash again, and coincidentally in the same competition. Still, there's one person in the Red Devils camp who has now become accustomed to finishing second best in these big European nights.

That's former Southampton left-back Luke Shaw who has completed the miserable double in losing Europa League as well as the Euros finals.

And the worst part? The only time he ended up on the winning side was in a Europa League title decider where he was ruled out from participating in the first place.

Since then, Shaw has endured two penalty heartbreaks in 2021 itself, where he was arguably the best player on the pitch on both occasions. Plus, last year, Shaw didn't fare any better alongside Gareth Southgate's men while witnessing his third European heartbreak.

And that unwanted hat-trick extended against Tottenham Hotspurs, where Shaw must have held his hopes high for capping off an injury-hit campaign on a high note.

Yet, the 29-year-old had to console himself with a runners-up medal but there is an even bigger fear waiting for him. The scary thought of this 1-0 defeat being the fullback's last shot at a European prize.

After all, Manchester United have only gone downhill over the years and a flurry of fatigues might even cut short Shaw's Three Lions career too. As things stand, it's a miserable scenario for the former Saints academy graduate which indeed feels saddening as a Southampton fan.

Let's hope Shaw returns to his level best soon and tastes some much-needed success for club and country before calling time on his playing career.
