Nicholas Oyekunle has joined Leyton Orient on a season-long loan. The 19-year-old striker isn't ready to lead the Southampton line just yet, so a full campaign in League One is the perfect classroom.
He's a prolific academy goal scorer who became the all-time leading marksman in the U18 Premier League. Two years back he plundered 31 goals in 30 games at that level.
Last season he made the jump to the under-21s and still grabbed 10 league goals, plus a handful of senior cameos off the bench. The talent is obvious, though League One is a harder, more physical test.
Why a loan makes sense now
Oyekunle signed fresh terms to 2028 in April, so Southampton can loan him out without any fear of losing him cheaply. A temporary move keeps him on the books while he develops.
He was also the under-21s' Players' Player of the Year, so nobody should read this as a step back. It reads as a reward with a bigger stage attached.
The forward picture at Staplewood is only getting busier. Divin Mubama is reportedly close to a loan from Manchester City.
Mubama scored a hat-trick against Bristol City for Stoke last season. He won't have come to sit on the bench.
Cameron Archer has suitors of his own, and Damion Downs is in the mix up top as well. A teenager would barely feature at Southampton this season.

Following the Ballard trail
Southampton have watched this Orient move pay off before. Dom Ballard left for Brisbane Road permanently in 2025, then tore League One apart.
Even Ballard needed time to get there. He made his Southampton debut as a 17-year-old in 2022, then bounced through loans at Reading, Blackpool and Cambridge United before it clicked at Orient.
Ballard top-scored his way to the League One Player of the Season award and Orient's own. This summer he earned a lucrative move to Bristol City.

Unlike Ballard, Oyekunle is only going out on loan. Southampton keep the striker on their books this time.
The hope is a season of goals in East London, then a return to push for a first-team spot. Bring him back sharper and battle-ready, and Saints have a homegrown forward for nothing.
