Just three and a half years ago, Aaron Ramsdale was riding high as No.1 goalkeeper for Premier League title-chasers Arsenal.
Fast forward to today, and the 28-year-old’s only recent appearance has been for Southampton’s U21 team. Before that, Ramsdale last started in the Premier League while on loan at Newcastle United in April.
It’s a huge shame to see such a decline in a career, and Ramsdale’s situation will suit nobody. Following Southampton’s final deadline-day signing, he could be sitting as low as fourth-choice in the ranks at the club.
Four goalkeepers on the books
After a 1-1 draw with Birmingham City on deadline day evening, it appeared Southampton’s transfer business was done. The club had other ideas.
30 minutes following the window’s closure at 11 pm, the club announced the termination of failed youngster Juan Larios’s contract, as well as revealing 37-year-old goalkeeper had re-signed for the club on a one-year deal.

Jones originally signed for Southampton during the 2025/26 season to boost the goalkeeping department following Gavin Bazunu’s loan departure to Stoke City in January.
Saints boss Tonda Eckert has already reaffirmed his commitment to Daniel Peretz and George Long as his first and second-choice goalkeepers despite the window shutting without Aaron Ramsdale moving on.
The signing of Jamie Jones plunges his position into further doubt.
A clear message
In Europe, the Scottish, Portuguese and Dutch transfer windows remain open until the 3rd of September, while the Turks and Saudis can keep shopping until the 12th of October.
It feels unlikely that Ramsdale will move abroad, but it has to be an option. At 28, he still has years left of his career, and there’s been nothing to suggest that Ramsdale has declined as a goalkeeper.
Unfortunately for him, Daniel Peretz was signed for £7m after wanting to stick around and help towards Southampton’s promotion efforts for this season.
The signing of Jamie Jones shows that the Saints are keen for the goalkeeping department to resume normal service from last season. Jones, Peretz and George Long make a decent working formula - however, eyebrows have been raised over the latter being second choice for a promotion-chasing side.
Ramsdale could now be available at cut price. If he wasn’t already, the Southampton goalkeeper is certain to be surplus to requirements. Reports suggest he was signed to a £ 120,000-a-week contract back in 2024.
Even with a 50% wage drop, it’s a fee far too high for a Championship club to pay - especially for their fourth-choice goalkeeper.
