Joshua Quarshie is attracting interest from the Bundesliga. Eintracht Frankfurt are reportedly watching the defender closely, which is no surprise. He is still young and still has potential, and clubs in Germany value that profile.

But Saints must look at the bigger picture.

Quarshie arrived with promise and expectation, and there was hope he would develop quickly into a first-team option. That has not quite happened. Progress has been steady but not rapid, and he has not forced his way into regular contention.

Southampton are now in a different phase. They are pushing for promotion and assembling a squad capable of competing at a higher level. Every place in the squad has to be earned, and every player must be ready to contribute.

Right now, Quarshie is not there.

Strength in depth already there

Southampton are well-stocked in the central defensive areas. Taylor Harwood-Bellis is one of the first names on the team sheet, and Jack Stephens has forced his way back into the side after a shaky start to the season.

Quarshie has been fighting for a place in the starting eleven against Stephens, Nathan Wood, and Ronnie Edwards, who has since departed for Queens Park Rangers.

There are experienced players, along with younger prospects emerging, such as Joachim Kayi Sanda. Since switching to a back four, there is balance across the defence. That makes it harder for Quarshie to break through and establish himself again.

And that is where the decision becomes clearer.

If a player is not close to the first team and interest is building, then sometimes the right move is to sell. Not because the player has failed, but because the timing suits everyone.

Quarshie still has value and that value may not increase if he continues to sit outside the main group.

Selling Quarshie could generate useful cash

Selling this summer could generate a useful fee, which could be reinvested. It could strengthen areas of greater need and help push the squad forward.

There is also the player to consider.

He needs minutes and he needs a clear pathway and he needs to play regularly to develop. That may not happen at Southampton right now.

So this is not a negative decision. It is a practical one.

Southampton have shown in the past that smart player trading can support long-term progress. This could be another example.

Quarshie still has a future in the game, and he may yet fulfil his potential. But that future may be elsewhere.

And for Saints, the focus must remain on building a squad ready for what comes next.
