Lyon's comfortable 3-1 win over Auxerre last night may prove to be a footnote in a season that has started well for a team that has won Ligue 1 seven times.
But for Southampton fans, an inconspicuous match in France may be of interest for one reason alone: Cameron Archer scored on debut for Auxerre.
The Saints loanee showed very quick feet as he skipped through a couple of challenges inside the box before thumping the ball low into the net from seven yards.
Preston North End were reportedly interested in Archer during the closing days of the window, before the player chose Ligue 1 and a season-long deal.
Already, the move looks like a good one. It's an opportunity for Archer to get a run of games and prove to his parent club that he should remain in the club's future plans.
A goal at the Groupama Stadium
Back-to-back defeats at Lens and at home to Angers meant that Will Still's side were rooted to the bottom of the table ahead of Auxerre's difficult trip to unbeaten Lyon.
Still had no hesitation in throwing his new centre-forward straight into the side, and the former Saints boss was repaid for his faith in Archer with a debut goal.
Archer's quick feet and crisp finish was the sort of thing that Southampton fans might have expected to see when he arrived from Villa in 2024.

Nobody at Staplewood will lose much sleep over Archer's absence at St Mary's. Cyle Larin has five league goals to his name already, and Divin Mubama found the net against Stoke City on debut.
Damion Downs has gone to St Louis on much the same basis, and Jay Robinson has proven to be a big hit in Italy as well. Holding on to their young assets, Southampton's policy of sending them out on loan may end up being a sound strategy.

Southampton are not selling their surplus forwards this year. They are posting them somewhere a price tag and a reputation can be rebuilt, and then waiting.
One goal in France means nothing on its own. But Cameron Archer will no doubt believe that he can find a way back to the top of the English pyramid again if he has a good run in France. Will Still will be using that particular carrot as motivation for his new English loanee striker.
