Southampton will start the 2026/27 Championship campaign on a points tally of -4 after being expelled from the Championship play-off final.
They’re the facts we do currently know - but the knock-on effects of this debacle have only just begun.
Players seeking to leave, sponsors exiting their lucrative deals with the club, global disdain and more - the knock-on effects have only just begun after the football club well and truly left their fans out to dry.
What next?
The Football Association is investigating Southampton's conduct after the club admitted to spying on three other Championship sides during the 2026/27 season.
Saints’ head coach Tonda Eckert, Sporting Director Johannes Spors, and analyst William Salt are among those who could be in trouble following the investigation and could face bans from football.
Internally at Southampton, nobody who was complicit will be safe if Southampton really wish to “respond with humility, accountability and determination to put things right,” as their statement alluded to after having an appeal over their punishment rejected.
Saints fans will not care about the 21-game league unbeaten run, journey to the FA Cup semi-finals, or anything else they’ve been subjected to in a season that appeared to be going near-perfectly. It has all been ruined by the decisions of people in positions of power, who have made Southampton Football Club a subject of ridicule.
The players
Southampton’s players will be absolutely furious with what has happened. Their hard work throughout the season, which saw them earn back the trust and love of their fans, has all gone to waste.
Players will undoubtedly be queuing up to leave the club now, not just because Saints are destined for the Championship next season, but also because of the disrepute they have been placed in.
Southampton’s Japanese winger Kuryu Matsuki already addressed the fans in a personal statement on his Instagram that ended with “thank you for everything”. Fan favourite Leo Scienza posted similarly, saying he felt “anger” and “sadness”.
In the coming days, Saints fans will want to and should see an emotional response from the club, even if the FA has an ongoing investigation.
Tonda Eckert met with the Southampton squad at 11am on Thursday morning following confirmation of the club’s failed appeal. It will surely have been a last goodbye from him to the players, given widespread reports that Eckert was complicit in the club’s spying.
Three out of Sport Republic’s four full seasons in majority ownership of the Saints have now been disastrous. Two relegations and an expulsion - quite frankly disgraceful reading.
There is a long way to go for them if they want to repair a relationship with the fans that is as broken as can be - and that can only be done if heads roll at the football club.
