Southampton have confirmed the last-minute signing of defender Kevin Danso on an initial season-long loan deal from Bundesliga side Augsburg.

Saints also reportedly have an exclusive option to buy Austrian at the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

As reported by the likes of the Daily Echo’s Adam Leitch and Sky Sports, Saints submitted a deal sheet to the Premier League yesterday evening and allowed themselves two further hours after the 5pm transfer deadline to complete the move.

After a long wait for Saints fans, they can now get excited about seeing their new man in action at St Mary’s.

At 20-years-old but still with some experience in the German top-flight, Danso is perhaps the ideal signing for Saints at this stage.

Ralph Hasenhuttl will know the Austrian and will have identified him as a realistic target today. The Saints boss has spoken about how he wants to bring in young players with huge potential.

Danso made 44 senior appearances for Augsburg and stands at around 6ft 3in tall; a significant addition to the defence and a player with much room to grow if coverage of his career to date are to be believed. He already has six senior caps for Austria despite his youth too.

He also came through the academy ranks at MK Dons and even played alongside Spurs midfielder Dele Alli before leaving for Germany aged 15.

He now joins Jannik Vestergaard, Jan Bednarek, Maya Yoshida, Wesley Hoedt and Jack Stephens as the options at centre-back

After the exciting additions of Che Adams and Moussa Djenepo, we could well back to seeing the best of Saints’ scouting setup after some signings that have not lived up to expectations in the past few years.

Earlier on Thursday, striker Charlie Austin left Saints to join West Brom permanently for a fee of around £4m.

Further good news also came when it was announced that key man Nathan Redmond had signed a new four-year deal with the club.

Overall, Saints managed to bring three new players in during the transfer window whilst also making Danny Ings a permanent signing.

Each of Austin, Jordy Clasie, Matt Targett and Sam Gallagher all left the club permanently as Hasenhuttl outlined his ideal group of players for the coming season.
