Southampton manager Russell Martin proved his managerial capabilities in the Championship last season, when he successfully guided the Saints to Premier League promotion in his debut season at the club. Following their return to the English top flight, the Saints made a total of 14 first-team signings to assemble a quality squad as Martin prepared to make his Premier League debut as a head coach.
A lot of Southampton fans expected that avoiding relegation would be a significant task for the Saints, which has been the case as Russell Martin's side have faced seven league defeats from their first eight matches. The promotion-winning manager has already experienced multiple struggles in the Premier League, with goalscoring issues and defensive mistakes being an inconsistent pattern in the beginning of the season.

Moreover, Southampton have taken the lead thrice this season but are yet to secure their first win of their league campaign. Thus, there are several rumours suggesting that the Southampton board can decide to sack Russell Martin in the coming weeks with West Brom manager Carlos Corberan and UEFA Conference League winner David Moyes among the heavy favourites to become the new head coach.
Hence, a few wins in the upcoming matches is much-needed at Southampton, but the Manchester City away fixture looks highly likely to result in an eighth league defeat. However, before the match, six-time Premier League winner Pep Guardiola suggested that he believes Martin can lead the Saints to make a comeback in the Premier League, saying,
"They will have success, when this happens you always have success sooner or later."

Guardiola is widely regarded as one of the best managers across Europe's top-five leagues in the previous fifteen seasons, thus his opinions on manager Russell Martin can prove to become true in the next few months. Therefore, Southampton should give enough time to Martin as he successfully achieved the aim of securing promotion last season and could still manage to avoid relegation this season.
