Southampton fans never push any off-field rivalries with Europe's elite clubs but Barcelona attacker Robert Lewandowski has delivered a humbling comment to the Saints.
Nowadays, fans of all top clubs across the European continent willingly jump into the discussions of their team being the best among the rest. Honestly, fan views reign supreme in this sport and sound quite well thought of if it's an on-paper Premier League title argument among the Big-Six outfits.
Moreover, comparing a Europe chasing underdog to a historically well team in decline also makes good sense. But there is no way a top-flight defending champion like Barcelona and second-tier Southampton be termed as equal performers.
It will stay unchanged even if a fraction of Saints fans head back to a praising argument, tagging St. Mary's legend Matt Le Tissier as equal to Barcelona's greatest Lionel Messi. Even this season, the La Liga giants have only once gone winless while Southampton are spilling league points uncontrollably.
Saints have been subpar lately but Lewandowski conveying it was needless
Hence, witnessing a Barcelona megastar deem the Saints as an underachieving group didn't need to be told. However, Robert Lewandowski thought otherwise and championed former Saint Jan Bednarek in a way that will leave the St. Mary's faithful more fuming than fulfilled.
In his own words, Lewandowski was quoted by A Bola: "I don't know when was the last time he won six games in a row, or at least didn't lose in that period."
The six consecutive victories asked above should be Southampton's priority to replicate multiple times in the Championship, but it's a vague and a far cry for the Premier League. Not every English squad starts those games to size out a win, some tailor their cloth according like when Southampton set out to annoy Manchester City for a point.
For now, the Saints need to pick speed on their winning journey if they are to make Lewandowski improve his routine beliefs about Southampton.
