If Southampton can survive all the talk that they could be expelled from the Championship playoffs, amid the ongoing Spygate scandal, Tonda Eckert's men are now just one match from returning to the Premier League, at the first time of asking.

Of course, that's easier said than done, as a playoff final at Wembley is never a walk in the park.

But, having ended the season 19 matches unbeaten, and the fact they've managed to get the better of Middlesbrough, despite the Spygate narrative raging on, means they will back themselves to beat Hull City towards the tail-end of May to break back into the promised land.

The aim, if they were to jump straight back into the top-flight, would be to consolidate themselves as a regular at the very top, again, with James Ward-Prowse a stellar example to follow, as the much-loved midfielder would become a Premier League regular at his hometown club.

Ward-Prowse is one of Southampton's best modern greats

At the time of writing, Ward-Prowse has gone on to make a colossal 420 Premier League appearances across his esteemed career, with St. Mary's his regular home in the top-flight.

Indeed, the 31-year-old is hardly remembered for his stints at West Ham Untied, Nottingham Forest, and Burnley, post Southampton. Rather, he is synonymous with the Saints when they were a top-flight staple, collecting 55 and 52 goals along the way.

Amazingly, Ward-Prowse was in the heart of the Saints midfield for 11 straight seasons in the Premier League before he moved on, winning himself 11 England caps in the process.

While he was known, overall, for being a classy operator on the ball, who wasn't afraid to launch into tackles on occasion, his distinctive trademark move was his ability to score an outrageous goal from nowhere, primarily from a free-kick situation.

In the same realm as Matt Le Tissier at Southampton, for always having an audacious strike up his sleeve, Ward-Prowse was even noted as being the "best set-piece taker in the world" at one stage of his Saints career by Pep Guardiola.

Eckert might well have his own Ward-Prowse in his ranks right now...

The star who could be replicating Ward-Prowse

The South Coast outfit needed a moment of inspired Ward-Prowse quality to guide them to a slim win against Middlesbrough on Tuesday night.

The man who conjured up said moment of quality was Shea Charles, as his ambitiously struck shot - which did look like a cross - wrong-footed Sol Brynn to clinch a vital 2-1 victory.

Scoring a fierce first-time effort against Oxford United earlier in the season, too, which has been nominated for the EFL's Goal of the Season award, alongside bagging a late winner against Swansea City last month, Charles has suddenly morphed into a player Southampton relies on to bail them out of a sticky moment.

Having previously been on the Manchester City books as an exciting starlet, as well, he will hope he can have a long-lasting career in the Premier League - like Ward-Prowse - having had to bide his time to get back to the promised land.

He has notched up 106 appearances in the second tier, now, so it does feel as if the 23-year-old's time to explode into life in the top-flight is coming very soon, with the Saints potentially only one more 90 minutes away from promotion glory being tasted.
