Some of the best business a football club can sometimes do is bring in a free agent.
This summer, this out-of-contract player is set to have many suitors, but Southampton will feel they’ll have what it takes to entice the former Sunderland captain, who has two recent Premier League promotions to his name, to St Mary’s.
Dan Neil, who captained Sunderland from League One to the Premier League, will be free to sign for whichever club wants his services this summer, after the expiration of his Black Cats contract.
At just 24 years old, Neil already has over 200 senior appearances for boyhood club Sunderland and Ipswich Town, where he spent the second half of the 2025/26 season on loan.
Southampton should pull out all the stops to capture Neil as the first of their summer business.
An experienced winner
Dan Neil is already a serial winner. A promotion from League One and twice as many from the Championship are already boasted on the CV of the 24-year-old.
With Caspar Jander likely to leave Southampton this summer, and Shea Charles being linked with a move away, Sporting Director Johannes Spors and the recruitment team at the club may need to find a worthy replacement or two.
Dan Neil could be perfect - a player with all the relevant characteristics to lead a club out of the Championship. A good holding midfielder, a born leader, a level head. The Saints should aim to get this one done quickly.
Potential drawbacks
If Southampton wish to sign Dan Neil with the hopes that he can start consistently in the Premier League, should they get there, then it is not the right deal for them.
Neil’s boyhood club, Sunderland, made the decision to let him go because they signed replacement Granit Xhaka last summer. Their ambitions were mighty, and worked out - the Black Cats secured a spot in the Europa League on return to the top flight.
A great Championship player, Dan Neil is not somebody likely to make that next jump. While being a squad player in the top flight could be reality, Neil wouldn’t be a long-term signing if all goes to plan.
But to get there, the Saints must conquer the Championship. Signing a player like Dan Neil, who was brought in by Ipswich to see them over the line last season and is wanted by Scottish giants Rangers in their quest to win the Premiership, there is a clear identity of sides that want his services.
If Sport Republic can get this signing done, it could be an excellent way to start what will hopefully be a positive summer, after the disappointing end to Southampton’s season.
