The 2025/26 season was shaping up to be one of the best in Southampton's recent memory.
Heading into the playoffs, Tonda Eckert's men were 19 games unbeaten and seen as the Championship's feel-good story. That isn't the case anymore.
Southampton have now been exposed as serial spies, trying to gain unfair advantages, with their prying finally exposed when a Saints analyst was caught snooping on a Middlesbrough training session, before the playoff semi-finals got underway.
The Teesside outfit has been reinstated, as the Saints have been embarrassingly chucked out, with Caspar Jander surely set for the exit door now these revelations have come to light.
Jander could leave on a cut-price deal
It has been widely reported, but with the Saints players being left in the dark as to the full extent of their side's skulduggery, several first-team figures could now leave St. Mary's for good in the summer.
It would have been a challenge to keep Jander situated on the South Coast past this summer, even if the Spygate fiasco didn't occur, as he had Bundesliga admirers.
But, now, the 23-year-old will surely be itching for a move away even more, with reports stating that the German battler could be available for a cut-price, amid the likes of Stuttgart sniffing.
He deserves a big top-flight move, as he very rarely let the team down this season just gone, when others behind the scenes caused Southampton's downfall, with a tenacious 5.6 duels won per league game giving the Saints an energetic presence centrally.
With Shea Charles being eyed up by Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, as well, the midfield ranks will need a drastic makeover in the summer, but the likes of Cameron Bragg could step up to plug gaps, with the academy prospect used sparingly by Eckert.
It's in attack, too, where Southampton will feel the painful repercussions of their foolish actions, with Leo Scienza likely to pull on a Premier League jersey, despite having top-flight football snatched away from him on the South Coast.
He isn't the only departure that could sting...
Southampton's expulsion from the playoffs is still very much fresh, but that hasn't stopped the relentless transfer rumour mill from linking Scienza to a whole host of top-flight clubs.
Aston Villa, who have just been crowned Europa League winners under Unai Emery, would be a very attractive next destination for the entertaining Brazilian, while Leeds United will look to consolidate their status as a top-flight regular, with a standout signing or two, by snapping up the 27-year-old.
Losing Scienza would sting even more than Jander's departure, as replacing a player of the ex-Heidenheim attacker's breathtaking quality is a far harder task than getting another lively midfielder in through the door.

The hard-to-read South American was a pivotal part of Southampton's promotion-chasing machine, before the wheels came off, ending the season as the Saints' top assist maker with ten assists, alongside bagging seven goals.
Losing this firepower from their ranks will be a big blow, with the number 13 undoubtedly becoming even more of a key first-teamer if his team had achieved promotion and hadn't fallen foul of their severe sanctions.
Nothing is set in stone yet when it comes to departures, but as the Saints' situation becomes clearer and the Spygate web of lies unravels, expect a long list of players to be deserting St. Mary's, including Scienza and Jander.
